Why craft?
A coworker of mine has some extra time, and I have suggested that she take up crafting. Her problem with indulging in crafting is she must have a place for her craft–she cannot make a craft without knowing exactly who it’s for, or where it will go. While she doesn’t anticipate having any trouble giving away the first few crafts, she worries about being the lady who makes handmade gifts and things for every event, the lady that everyone gets sick of because they’d like to receive a gift that was bought in a store, just for once.
To that end, I’ve suggested she take up scrapbooking–by using her own pictures and scrapping the main events in her life, she gets to use something she already has and turn it into something that she may enjoy even more.
What other crafts would you suggest she consider?

Obviously, I am all for the scrapbooking idea :). I would also suggest asking her what kinds of things she likes to use or decorate with, then encourage her to try crafting those types of items first. Also remind her, that just because she starts with one type of craft, it does not mean she cannot learn others.

Are there any local community centers that offer general arts and crafts? I teach one in Philly and people seem to really like that it is something different each week and that it is time to socialize as well.
Also, how about greeting cards? Then you are expected to send them out/give them away, plus you can incorporate quilling, drawing, cut and paste, painting, collages, …endless possibilities…
