Mad about Mad Hatter Hats Paper Crafting Tutorial

I am just mad for Mad Hatter hats!  Having grown up loving Alice in Wonderland, then my oldest was the Cheshire cat in her High School play... and my adoration of all things Steam Punk (a mixture of science fiction and fantasy with advanced technology based on steam power.. very Doctor Who and it ties into one of my favorite movies Kate and Leopold).  When a friend and crafter, Ashley, called wanting to have a Private Class and create Mad Hatter hats... I was bubbling over with excitement!!  YES!!  So join me with this fun tutorial on making these cute hats.

OK so this is my second youngest and you have to admit - these adorable hats ROCK!!
See this tutorial below:
Using a Dixie Cup as my template... cut up one side and remove the base of the cup.

Lay it out over the back of the paper you want to use.  Trace with a pen.
*Cut out the template with sharp scissors, our Paper Snips (#103579) and Craft Scissors (#108360) are great high-quality tools that make precision cuts showing how GOOD You are!!
* When cutting the template out - also cut 1/2"-1/4" on one side - out side of your template for a lip.  Use this lip for adhesive.
Using the Circle Collections Framelits they have the perfect fit for this project and the base that matches the template!  Cutting out the base for the smaller side, for the larger side of the hat and the hat brim with the Circle Collection Framelits on the Big Shot Die-Cutting Machine and Magnetic Platform.

Cut 4 strips 6" x 1/2" to use for structure and to hold the bases of the hat to the open holes.
Hot Glue the strips the each side open in the hat.  Making an 'X' of these strips will support the structure while holding the 'lids' to the hat.
Here is my Mad Hatter style hats in the *Etcetera Designer Series Paper with Very Vintage Designer Buttons adhered like a corset.  Tie on the Very Vanilla Seam Binding ribbon for a pretty coordinated bow - this'd make a great wedding party hat or non-traditional bridal hat.

This very cool *Modern Medley Designer Series Paper has a beautiful Cherry Cobbler and Daffodil Delight rose made with the Spiral Flower Die.  Accented with the Cherry Cobbler Seam Binding Ribbon and Antique Brad for a cool look.. now to find a reason to wear it!!  Adding the adhesive backed *Large Pearl Jewels (on sale through Monday on the Weekly Deals) for a pretty center to the rose.
This cute Lamb card in the Spiral Flower Die Rose with *Large Pearl Jeweled center accented *Etcetera Designer Series Paper for a cool vintage looking Mad Hatter hat.  Accented with the *Victoria Crochet Trim and Antique Brads... it's a wonderful vintage looking accessory.  Add the *Baked Brown Sugar Ruffled Trim to the top for a fun feminine accent.

The *Venetian Romance Designer Series Paper is a cool combination of colors and design for an elegant look. Create a 'Corset' look (very Steam Punk) with the Vintage Trinkets brads before adhering hat so that the brads are hidden inside.  The adhesive backed *Large Pearl Jewels are a cool random accent.  I couldn't resist adding one dash of the Antique Brad near the 'corset' of Vintage button brads.  Tie on some elegance with the Very Vanilla Seam Binding Ribbon.
Oh... It is sooooo hard to pick!!
I'm hoping my oldest will let me throw a fun themed party when she becomes engaged - I see my girls and I having a blast making these sweet accessories.

Which is YOUR Favorite??  Leave me a comment and let me know!!
Adding this Bobby Pin with a strip of the Designer Series Paper.  Use Ribbon, too, to tie these beautiful accessories on.
My girls were besides themselves in getting these pretty hats on... I see us creating something fun like this for an upcoming birthday party.
Erica created this cute hat at the Mad Hatter Private Class... the Modern Medley Designer Series Paper is soon to retire!!  Grab it and its awesomeness on the Last Chance List - when it's gone, it's gone!!  (Here she raided my private stash of retired items and used the Black Satin ribbon as the accent on this card - adding a pop of color with the Cherry Cobbler Binding.

These black pearls are our adhesive backed Pearl Jewels that are colored in with a black permanent marker.

Easter Paper Cone

This Easter deliver something pretty that is sure to bring smiles!  These pretty paper cones are a great way to celebrate outside of the typical basket.  With a bold, colorful pattern and vintage design, this embodies Easter and the beauty of the Spring season.  See this tutorial and feel free to share me, leave me a comment and let me know what you think!
Create these cones with:
Watercolor Wonder Designer Series Paper (#132994)
Tangerine Tango card stock (#111349)
Tea Lace Paper Doilies (#129399)
Crisp Cantaloupe Ruffle Stretch Trim (#130021)
Victoria Crochet Trim (#118481)
In-Color Boutique Details (#130934)
Vintage Faceted Designer Buttons (#127555)
Antique Brads (#117273)
Large Pearl Jewels (#125577)
Spiral Flower Die (#129379)
Big Shot Die-Cutting Machine (#113439)
If you enjoy this card and want to have some fun crafting with me, CLICK HERE and RSVP ASAP for my Upcoming Classes!!  Most classes are FREE with a qualified purchase!!
Start with a Square Cut piece of the Watercolor Wonder Designer Series Paper.  There are three examples here, a 8", a 6" and a 4" square for a variety of sizes.  Decide which of the patterns that you'd like for the exterior of the paper cone (our Designer Series Paper is DOUBLE SIDED - so have FUN creating and mixing your look, I'm creating these for an event at the church we will be attending for Easter).  The pattern will color coordinate while wowing with an inner design, much like and envelope liner!

The secret to creating these cones is to use a bone folder to curl the edges like you see in the top of this tutorial.  Pre-roll/curl both edges with the side of your bone folder.  Curl and create the cone you desire.

Apply one line of hot-glue on the exterior flap but inside a bit, this allows for an area that the hot glue can 'fill' with out pouring outside of the cone flap.

I was demonstrating this project to a coordinator of a large event, I explained that if you are making many, break down the creating.  Start by curling all of the papers with the bone folder.  Then when that is completed curl and seal the flaps down.  You will move quickly and much like your first pancake, the first one may not be your most beautiful.. but with practice and familiarity with the project you will create stunning paper cones and quickly!

Create a flap holder when you embellish the cone with a button, rose, brad, etc.  Here this In-Color Boutique Details embellishment in the Crisp Cantaloupe is hot glued on the bottom half alone - so that the flap can slip under and be held down.
OK so I adore, yes - ADORE, the Spiral Flower Die!!  IT creates these stunning 3D flowers out of do many materials!  Here with the Spiral Flower Die and Big Shot, I created a Spiral flower out of the Tea Lace Doilies and Tangerine Tango.

Layer them for this fun and funky, vintage vibe flower.  I use Hot Glue to adhere the flower together.  Apply a small bead of the Hot Glue to the finished rose and it will hold the bottom half to the paper cone, while allowing the top half to hold the flap down on the top.

Add this adhesive Large Pearl to the center for more elegance.  These adhesive backed pearls add a warmth and luster to the flower.
Applying the Crisp Cantaloupe Stretch Ruffle Trim to the inside flap of the larger paper cone is a fun way to add frill!  Accented with the Vintage Faceted Designer Button to hold down the flap, this sparkles and would be great for a bridal or baby shower, a girly party and more!  Have fun mixing textures and adding elegance with a variety of accents.
This 4" square is my smallest of the cones and my kids couldn't resist stealing one for their own play time!  These are super cute, delicate and deliver a small treat that is sure to delight.

Accented on this cone is the Antique Brad.  I adore the vintage elegant vibe.  It makes for a luxurious looking cone.

These would be ideal for a flower girl or guests to a wedding - fill it with seeds or rose petals for a pretty showering of love on the newlyweds!

Decorate your home, surprise family, friends or neighbors with this door hanger!  Fill with fresh or fake flowers, create paper flowers with the Spiral Flower Die and wow!

Simply punch two holes through the back of the paper cone and thread a ribbon through.  Here, adding to the vintage look of this cone, use the Victoria Crochet Trim and deliver a classic and beautiful gift! (Perfect for May Day greetings!!)

No matter how you embellish this paper-cone, you are sure to have a BLAST creating and delivering smiles!  I hope that you enjoyed this paper cone tutorial.  Change it up this Easter (or May Day or Mother's Day) and fill a basket full of these cones!  You can use these beautiful cones and fill with jewelry, small candles or (yumm) candy (chocolates, jelly beans, favorite candies, etc).  Use these for weddings, parties or just to delight!  Please feel free to Share Me and this tutorial with your friends and family!

What Others are SAYING about Getting Crafty with Jamie

Jamie is so passionate and creative about making cards - and wants everyone else to join her in the fun! She is so encouraging and positive in her attitude, helping me along when I get frustrated - and then rejoicing with me at the finished product! I love going to her classes to get new ideas, learn techniques, and have loads of fun in the process. ~ Christine C.

Jamie has wicked awesome classes! If you don’t like a particular stamp or paper/ink color Jamie wants you to change it to suit your style! I did my sister-in-law’s entire bridal shower from invitations/thank you cards, party favors to decorations, it was quaint and whimsical! Everyone ooh’d and ahh’d! I’ve had lots of special requests for classes and Jamie delivers; she always has tasty treats and flavored coffees too ~Ashley W.

I have been attending Jamie's classes for over a year. Her ideas for cards are fresh and fun. She always tries to have several different styles of cards available, so everyone gets to make cards that fit their personal style. The techniques she shows each class can be used in many different applications. She is very patient teacher when instructing class members on how to use the Stampin Up products. ~ Carol D.

If I looked up the word sparkle in the dictionary, I would find Jamie Albanese picture there. I have had the sweet blessing of knowing Jamie and her family for over 5 years now. Every time I am with her I feel loved and inspired. When I am in one of her classes I feel my creative juices flow, as she encourages me to go outside my comfort zone. Jamie helped our girl scout troop make cards for a soldier who needed some encouragement!!! For any of you who have not been in one of Jamie's classes, please don't let another day slip by. She is a beautiful friend and she will become yours too. ~ Blessings, Karen:-)

Jamie has a great eye for style and flair, and it shows in her work. Yet she can pick up on your own individual style and makes great recommendations. I love that she is always flexible for last-minute decision maker mommies like me! So much fun to host craft events with your friends and family - that personal touch always means so much. ~ Adonna
