Vintage Valentines Love hand-crafted card making tutorial

Valentine's Day started in 496 (WOW) and in the 18th Century the art of sending Valentine's Day cards came to America.  I love how this historic celebration of love is still practiced today!  So in a nod to the days of old, this Vintage Valentine was hand-crafted at our recent Valentine Palooza Card Making Class.  See how fun it is to take a trip to the past and revel in the beauty of old fashioned looking Valentine Day Cards.  I love how these new paper crafting tools, embossing folders, thinlits, stamp sets, embellishments and more can create a lovely vintage hand-stamped card.

I adore this new Bundle in the Occasions Catalog!!  The Crazy About You stamp set has 33 stamps that perfectly coordinate with the Hello You thinlits.  Here you create a custom saying that fits your exact need.  Stamp your sentiment (here the 'Love') with Stazon Jet Black ink pad.  Emboss the Blushing Bride card stock (4-1/8"x 5-1/4") with the Happy Hearts embossing folder in the Big Shot.  This will give you a clear stamped image (versus stamping after embossing).

Die cut a strip of Very Vanilla card stock using the Hello You thinlits on the Magnetic Platform and Big Shot Die-Cutting Machine.  Adhere with the Multipurpose Liquid Adhesive as the lines are sooo thin!!

Punch 8 hearts using the Sweetheart punch and vintage Typset Specialty Designer Series Paper.  Fold four together and use the Multipurpose Liquid Adhesive down the seam of each to stack these four punched hearts.  Fluff for a cool look and adhere to the embossed card front with Stampin' Dimensional Adhesive.

Accent with the Antique Brads, Artisan Rosettes, Venetian Crochet Trim and adhesive backed Pearl Jewels.

Create this stunning Rosette/Lolly using our Simply Scored Scoring Tool.  I LOVE, Love, love the Color Me Autumn Designer Series Paper!!  This collection of prints and colors are stunning! 

Using the Simply Scored Scoring Tool lay your sheet of 12"x12" Designer Series Paper on it.  Score all of the 12" page if you want to use multiple strips!  Score at every 1/4" mark and cut a strip at 1-1/2".  Fold and create a Lolly/Rosette using Hot Glue to hold it on the Blackberry Bliss (that is cut down to 5"x3-3/4").

 Stamp this sweet pansy from the Flower Shop rubber stamp set in Blackberry Bliss ink on the Whisper White card stock.  The Pansy Punch is designed to coordinate with this stamp set and makes it easy to pop out the stamped image!  Using Hot Glue to adhere it to the Lolly/Rosette center.

Stamping this 'you made my day' cheer from the A Dozen Thoughts rubber stamp set in Blackberry Bliss ink on a strip of Whisper White card stock.  Using my Paper Snips to create this flag end.  Use the Bone Folder to roll the edges for some fun to this card.  What a fun and easy, rich in color and style, hand-stamped card (it was a HIT at the Fall for Fall card class - don't miss out on the many crafting class options and Join the Fun!!).

Butterfly hand-stamped wreath and dry erase board

I love butterflies!  We released live butterflies at our wedding and they are kind of like a family logo for us.  Most things in nature delight me.  Creating a fun Butterfly wreath and matching dry-erase board is easy and stunning with our Swallowtail stamp and this cool hand-stamped stained-glass technique.  These were created for the Best Selling Author, Brenda Novak's Diabetes Auction. Who knew that butterflies could fight diabetes??

This is how you do hand-stamped, mock stained-glass.  The secret to a better embossed image is to always prep the surface with the Embossing Buddy. 

 

~ Prep the surface of the Vellum card stock with the Embossing Buddy by rubbing the EB over the surface of the Vellum.

~  Stamp the image (here the Swallowtail background stamp) with Versa Mark ink on the Vellum card stock.

~ Liberally cover with embossing powder (here the Black Embossing Powder)

~  Shake off the excess that the Versa Mark does not hold.

~  Heat set with the Heat Tool until completely shiny.  The secret to using the Heat Tool is to hold it at a 45* angle and do not move the Heat Tool until the Embossing Powder sets/turns shiny.  Move slowly across the surface of the image until the image is set as you go.  It is not a hair dryer.  It needs even heat to set properly.

~ Using the Aqua Pen in the ink pad (squish the ink pad while closed and open - you will have a collection of ink to use in water coloring).

Here the Gumball Green satin stitched ribbon (retired, sigh) is a bold and beautiful green that comes right from nature!  Wrap the ribbon around this wire wreath (I grabbed some on-sale through Amazon and have seen similar ones at the Dollar store).  Using the Hot Glue gun to secure the ribbon to the wire.  This will give a strong surface to adhere the Spiral Flower Die roses and the hand-stamped, stained-glass butterflies.

Using the rich In-Color 2012-14 retired card stock to create coordinating roses.  These Spiral Flower Roses are stunning and easy to create.  Using the Butterfly Die to create blank butterflies and adhere as 'filler' where there may be "open space".

 Hot Glue the Butterflies and colorful roses to the ribbon covered wire wreath.  This will deliver a colorful greeting to all who see it.  (Keep a wreath like this inside - the paper could be ruined by the elements.)

Creating a coordinating dry erase board is a great way to give a deluxe gift.  Frame it in a frame of your choice and you have a stunning, coordinating dry erase board that will delight!  Adding a Spiral Flower Rose in the Watercolor Wonder Designer Series Paper is a pretty 3D accent.  Hot glue is a wonder, isn't it??

Here with the Watercolor Wonder Designer Series Paper as a base, prep, stamp and emboss the butterfly.  Using the Aqua Pen to color it in.

Butterflies are sure to delight as they are delicate while being strong, change to adapt and grow, colorful and light as a breeze.  The winner of the Brenda Novak Diabetes Auction took home this delightful collection of cards with the hand-stamped, stained-glass butterfly and rose wreath and the coordinating dry-erase board.  I love that paper-crafting and butterflies could help fight Diabetes!!

Stunning everlasting roses

I love roses - receiving, giving and growing them!  The reality is that they die, sigh.  With an upcoming 50th Wedding Anniversary for dear friends of ours, I wanted to give them the gift of everlasting roses!  Using the Spiral Flower Die, Big Shot and these stunning collections of paper creating 50 everlasting roses was a labor of love that was fun to do!

These roses are easy to create!  Use the Spiral Flower Die and cut two materials.  Here the Gold Foil Sheets and Gold Foil Vellum are layered.  The secret to creating depth and movement is using the Bone Folder.  I like to use it on the edges of the flower so the leaves have a lovely fall to it.  Use Hot Glue to seal them to the base for a super strong hold. (Be careful, hot glue is HOT - ouch!)

Our dear friends are having their 50th Wedding Anniversary so of course we need these pretty Gold roses.  They are decorating with blush tipped cream roses - so incorporating this look is easy.  Use the Very Vanilla and Blushing Bride card stock and do the same as the gold flowers.  Roll the edges with the bone folder, roll and use the hot glue to adhere it.  This is a great way to add interest and make for a pretty table decoration!

WHEW!  So we worked for hours, my helpers Stephany, Marta and I.. but this labor of love is one that will bless our beloved friends (who I am often mistake as her daughter and love her deeply).

All lined up and ready to party!  So add a strip with the names and date and these pretty decorations become a great gift to the guests!!  Simply adhere it to the bottom of the rose and it can be a memorable 'leaf' of sorts.
